Cross Country Commences the Alabama Athletics 2020-21 Year this Weekend

The Crimson Tide opens the season at the Commodore Classic Saturday morning
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Crimson Tide men's and women's cross country teams head to the Commodore Classic in Nashville, Tenn., to kick off the 2020 season, the Alabama athletic year, as well as the Southeastern Conference slate. Both teams will return to the trail Saturday morning at Percy Warner Park. Saturday's race will be the program's first competitive event since Feb. 29.
The men will run an 8k race at 8:30 a.m. CT, with the women set to compete in a 6k race at 9:15 a.m. CT at the Vaughn's Gap CC Course.
In addition to Alabama and host Vanderbilt, the five-team field also features Auburn, Kentucky and Missouri.

LEADING THE LINEUP
- The Tide men will run Mateo Barreto, Jack Hawes, Jace Jones, Rich Saenz, Paul Selden, Grady Shiflet, Garrett Suhr and Jacob Wiggers
- Running for the UA women will be Mercy Chelangat, Esther Gitahi, Leahrose Mami, Caroline McGrath, Jami Reed, Sophie Spada and Alex Wilkins
- Debuting this weekend for the Crimson Tide will be Barreto, Hawes and Jones for the men, while Spada makes her appearance for the women
TIDE TIDBITS
- Earlier this week, both Alabama men's and women's cross country were picked to finish third by the conference coaches in the 2020 Southeastern Conference cross country preseason poll.
- A season ago, the Crimson Tide men finished runner-up at the conference meet with three runners finishing in the top-10 individually. Meanwhile, the women finished fifth, marking the first top-five team finish since 2015.
UP NEXT
After Saturday's meet, both Alabama teams are scheduled to travel to the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla., on Oct. 2. The 2020 SEC Championships are scheduled for Oct. 30 in Baton Rouge, La.
