Alabama Track and Field Opens Florida Relays with Nation’s Best Time in the Women’s 200 Meter

The Crimson Tide competed in the men’s and women’s 200 meters on day one of the prestigious meet, with junior Mauricia Prieto posting a career-best mark to rank No. 1 nationally and win the event
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Junior Mauricia Prieto opened Alabama track and field's run at the Florida Relays with a blistering 22.86 to win the 200 meters in Gainesville, Fla, on Thursday
Prieto's mark was a career-best, which ranks as the No. 1 time in the nation coming into the weekend, bettering the nation's top time prior to Thursday by more than a tenth of a second. She was the only runner under 23 seconds in Gainesville, streaking to the win by more than a tenth of a second. Her time also ranks her sixth all-time at Alabama, just a hundredth of a second behind Stacy Bowen's time from 1994.
Four others from Alabama also posted top-15 finishes in the event, with juniors Takyera Roberson, D'Jai Baker, Natassha McDonald and Krystal Sparling taking fifth, ninth, 12th and 15th, respectively.
In the men's 200 meters, junior Alize Ford took 18th with a time of 20.91, while senior Skyler Bowden was 22nd with a 20.98.
The Crimson Tide returns to action on Friday with a full slate of events. Alabama will also compete in the distance events at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday.
