Alabama Men’s Golf Ready to Host Annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate

Tide has won event in back-to-back seasons and six of last seven years overall
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's golf team is set to host the 2019 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be played at the par-70, 7,204 yard Old Overton Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala. It marks the 34th year that the Crimson Tide, which was won back-to-back team titles entering this year's tournament, has hosted the JPNI.
In addition to consecutive wins, Alabama has experienced recent success by winning the team title in six of the last seven years and 10 times overall – each of which have come over the past 13 years. Alabama has seen five players capture medalist honors over the years, including David Kirkpatrick in 1991, Joseph Sykora in 2006, Mark Harrell in 2007, Hunter Hamrick in 2009, Thomas in 2012 and Robby Shelton in 2015.
The 2019 tournament is free to the public and will consist of 36 holes (two rounds) of play on Monday starting at 7:30 a.m., followed by a third and final round scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
ABOUT THE JERRY PATE
- The host and tournament namesake Jerry Pate is one of the most successful professional golfers to have worn the Crimson and White. The former Alabama golfer and Champions Tour player proudly lends his name and plays an active role — from team selection to presenting the awards trophies
- Pate and Alabama have hosted this event since 1986. Originally, the tournament was held in Pate's hometown of Pensacola, Fla. He moved the tournament in 1992 to Birmingham's Shoal Creek, where it remained for five years. In 1997, the tournament moved to its current home, the Old Overton Club
THE ALABAMA LINEUP
- Junior Wilson Furr will play in the top slot, following by sophomore Frankie Capan III as the Tide's No. 2 player. Freshman Simms Abney is at No. 3, followed by junior Jake DeZoort and sophomore Prescott Butler rounding out the Tide's final to spots, respectively
- Furr will be playing in his 23rd consecutive stroke play tournament when he tees it up on Monday morning. That number leads all UA golfers
- This will be DeZoort's first stroke play tournament he's competed in this season after seeing action in six events a year ago
LAST TIME OUT
- Alabama freshman Thomas Ponder carded a 4-under par 66 in the final round to lead the Crimson Tide at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational. Behind Ponder's performance, the Tide shot a team score of 284 – 10 shots better than each of its previous two rounds – to climb into a 10th-place finish with overall team total of 872 (294-294-284).
- The tournament title was shared by No. 3 Georgia Tech and No. 20 Baylor, after both teams finished the event with identical scores of 6-over par 846. Tenth-ranked Pepperdine (849), No. 23 North Carolina (856), No. 14 Texas A&M (859) and No. 19 Illinois (859) round out the top five teams, respectively. In all, 11 of the 15 teams in the field were ranked among the top-25 in the nation by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
