Alabama Men’s Tennis Looks Ahead to ITA Southern Regional Championships

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama men's tennis will travel to Auburn for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southern Regional Championships on Thursday, Oct. 17 to Tuesday, Oct. 22. Freshman Avi Shugar and junior Sam Fischer will begin the singles qualifying round play on Thursday. Juniors Patrick Kaukovalta, Riccardo Roberto and Jeremy Gschwendtner, along with seniors Alexey Nesterov, Zhe Zhou and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza will start play on Saturday.

Tournament Info

The qualifying singles round will begin on Thursday and will continue into Friday morning. The main doubles draw will start on Friday afternoon, while main singles is set to begin on Saturday.
Shugar is set to start the qualifying round of the singles tournament at 9 a.m. on Thursday against Misha Fomenkov from the University of New Orleans, while Fischer will take on Tim Dollman of Auburn at 11:30 a.m.
Teams participating include Auburn, Alabama, Alabama State, Jacksonville State, Troy, South Alabama, Samford, UAB, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, New Orleans, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulane.
Kaukovalta/Zhou come into the tournament as the No. 3 seed in doubles. The duo has yet to play a match together in the fall.

Player Info

Fischer is a perfect 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles so far this fall season. The Brentwood, Tenn. native, went undefeated at the Samford Round Robin on Oct. 6.
Nesterov leads the team with a 9-2 singles mark, while Roberto is second on the squad with a 6-2 record so far this season.
Gschwendtner/Garza are a perfect 4-0 as a doubles pair to lead the Tide this year.
