The two teams went scoreless through the first four before things opened up in the fifth
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball's first contest of the Fall World Series resulted in a 2-2 tie on Tuesday afternoon at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The day was the first of three in the Crimson Tide's extended game to close out the fall.
Tuesday saw both teams go scoreless until the fifth when Crimson plated two. Junior Brett Auerbach began the inning with a walk to start a streak of two free passes, giving the visitors a pair of baserunners. One out later, Auerbach stole third before a wild pitch allowed him to come home with the man at first advancing to third on the play. One out later, a sacrifice fly from freshman Tyler Ras crossed the second run of the frame, giving Crimson a 2-0 advantage.
Gray answered with one of its own in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 2-1 game. A two-out walk and a single put runners at first and third for Keith Holcombe. The senior capitalized on the opportunity, sending an RBI-single through the right side to score Gray's first tally.
The score moved to 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, as Gray was able to push things to a tie heading into Wednesday. A leadoff double followed by a walk forced a Crimson pitching change. Sophomore Sam Praytor was the first to face the new reliever, drawing a walk to load the bases. Crimson was then able to get the inning's first out with the bags still full, but a grounder to first from junior Kolby Robinson in the next at-bat scored the man from third to even things up after seven frames.
Alabama will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for day two of the Fall World Series. First pitch on Wednesday is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT with the score set at 2-2 to start. Things will wrap up for Alabama baseball on Friday at 4 p.m., when the final innings of the Tide's three-day event will be played at The Joe.
