TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The University of Alabama has released its 2004 baseball schedule Wednesday, in an announcement made by 10th year head coach Jim Wells.
The Crimson Tide's 56-game regular-season schedule features 23 games against teams that played in the 2003 NCAA Regionals, including College World Series participants South Carolina and LSU.
The Crimson Tide will also play Birmingham Southern at Scrushy-Striplin Field on the BSC campus for the first time since the 1980 season. Bama will also face Louisiana Tech, Centenary and Kansas State in the Centenary Gent Classic at Fairgrounds Field in Shreveport this first weekend in March.
Alabama will host non-conference weekend series with New Orleans, Cincinnati, Southeastern Louisiana and Southeast Missouri State at the Joe. Southern Miss, the defending Conference USA champions, returns to the home schedule after a one-year absence.
The two-time defending SEC Tournament champions will play five SEC home series against Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Florida and Miss. State. The five SEC road series will come against Georgia, Arkansas, LSU, South Carolina and Kentucky.
Alabama is playing Vanderbilt this season for the first time since 2001 and will not play Tennessee for the first time since 1993.
The season will be one week longer in 2004, thus the post-season has been pushed back one week. The SEC Tournament will be held at the Hoover Met from May 26-30, 2004. The NCAA Regionals (June 4-6) and Super Regionals (June 11-13) will be held the next two weekends. The 2004 College World Series will be held June 18-28 at Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb.
Alabama (38-24) had the nation';s 21st best RPI last year after finishing third at the NCAA College Station Regional, losing to Texas A&M and Houston. The Crimson Tide also won its sixth SEC Tournament championship (1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2002 and 2003) last season under coach Wells, including its second in a row after beating LSU 10-3 in the title game.
The Crimson Tide will open the 2004 season at home against the New Orleans Privateers on Friday, Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. Season ticket renewals and applications will be available through the Alabama Athletic Ticket Office in November with a renewal deadline of mid-December.
