Alabama Track and Field Advances Two to the NCAA Championships on Day One of Women’s Competition at the NCAA East Preliminary

Mercy Chelangat (10,000 meters) and Samantha Zelden (javelin) both punched their ticket for the NCAA Championships final site in Eugene, Ore., next month
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Alabama track and field advanced two to the NCAA Championships final site on day one of women's competition at the NCAA East Preliminary being held in Bloomington, Ind., at the Robert Haugh Track & Field Complex this week.
The top-12 competitors in each event advance to NCAA Championships' final site in Eugene, Ore., next month.
Mercy Chelangat won the 10,000 meters with a time of 34:17.49 to punch her ticket to Eugene. She will also run the 5,000 meters on Saturday, looking to add to her schedule at the national championships.
Samantha Zelden used a throw of 50.41 meters to finish 11th and earn a spot at the national championships in the javelin.
Moving on to Saturday
- In addition to having two clinch their spots at the NCAA Championships' final site, Alabama had three advance in the shorter races, where the field was cut in half, from 48 to 24 on Thursday, and will be cut to the final 12 on Saturday
- Flomena Asekol posted a career-best and facility-record time of 4:12.67 to dominate the first round of the 1,500 meters, advancing to Saturday with a chance to punch her ticket for Eugene
- Amara Obi posted a career-best 52.98 to advance to Saturday in the 400 meters
- Amari Brown earned her spot in the 200 meters on Saturday with a time of 23.29
The Men on Friday
- The men return to action on Friday with Jerimiah Evans, Chago Basso and Alan de Falchi slated to get things started at 12 p.m. CT in the discus
- The top-12 competitors and the top-12 relays in each event will advance to Eugene, Ore., next month for the NCAA Championships
- Six from UA advanced from Wednesday, including Corde Long (400-meter hurdles), Eliud Kipsang (1,500 meters), Khaleb McRae (400 meters), Tarsis Orogot (200 meters), Demetrius Jackson (200 meters) and Jacob Lamb (800 meters)
- Victor Kiprop, who already qualified in the 10,000 meters, along with Hillary Cheruiyot will race for a berth at nationals in 5,000 meters
- Alabama will also run the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays on Friday
- Bobby Colantonio Jr. (hammer), Victor Kiprop (10,000 meters), Isaac Odugbesan (shot put) and Chago Basso (shot put) have already earned a trip to Oregon
