Alabama Men's Golf Opens 2020 Spring Season in Puerto Rico

Crimson Tide will begin play on Sunday morning
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's golf team will open the 2020 spring campaign at the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 16-18. The event, which is hosted by Purdue University, will tee off on Sunday morning in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico on the par 72, 6,902-yard Rio Mar Country Club River Course.
The Alabama Lineup
- Alabama's starting five is led by freshman Thomas Ponder and junior Wilson Furr, who topped the Crimson Tide in stroke average this past fall at 72.83 and 72.89, respectively
- Ponder and Furr will be joined in the Alabama lineup by senior Jake DeZoort along with sophomore Frankie Capan III and freshman Canon Claycomb, who is making his Crimson Tide debut after enrolling in classes this semester.
- Freshman Simms Abney will also be on the trip and will compete as an individual over the three-day event

- This year will mark 16th consecutive year the Crimson Tide has competed in the event
- Alabama has won six team titles (2008, 2011-14, 2016) while Crimson Tide individuals have claimed a total of six medalist honors, including Matthew Swan in 2008, Justin Thomas in 2012, Robby Shelton in 2014 and 2016, Dru Love in 2015 and Lee Hodges in 2017
- Alabama is one of 15 teams who will compete in the 28th edition of the Puerto Rico Classic and one of 10 squads ranked among the top 60 in the nation
- UA begins the spring season ranked No. 53 in the Golfstat rankings and will be joined in the field by No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Georgia Tech, No. 19 Georgia, No. 24 Clemson, No. 28 Tennessee, No. 35 Ole Miss, No. 52 Purdue, No. 56 North Carolina State and No. 58 Ohio State. The rest of the field is comprised of East Carolina, Iowa, College of Charleston, Maryland and Marquette.
Alabama will begin play at the three day, 54-hole event on Sunday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET (7 a.m. CT). Live scoring throughout the week can be found at Golfstat.com.
