Alabama Men’s Tennis Closes Out Successful Weekend at Samford Round Robin

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama finished out a successful weekend at the Samford Round Robin in Birmingham on Sunday. Junior Sam Fischer and freshman Marcelo Sepulveda Garza went undefeated in both singles and doubles play.
Round-by-Round
- Alabama started the day with another dominant performance in doubles action. The Tide went a combined 5-1 on the day. In the third round, Fischer and senior Alexey Nesterov took care of Stodder/Chrysostrom of Tennessee, 7-5. Junior Riccardo Roberto and freshman Avi Shugar moved past Tasker/Poyatos of Troy, 6-3, while junior Jeremy Gschwendtner and Sepulveda Garza eased past Llinares/Bernard from Troy, 6-1.
- In the final round of doubles, Fischer/Nesterov battled to a 7-6(4) win over Rauch/Roca of Middle Tennessee, while Gschwendtner and Sepulveda Garza also took care of business against El Safadi/Puric from UAB, 6-4.
- The Tide picked up four singles wins to close the weekend. Sepulveda Garza earned his fourth singles victory after cruising past Leon Pet'ko of South Alabama, 6-1, 6-3. Fischer also went 4-0 in the tournament by defeating Henry Lovett from Tulane, 6-4, 6-4. Roberto came away with a 7-6(6), 6-2, win over Akos Kotorman of Tulane, while Gschwendtner came out victorious in three sets against Louis Delcour of South Alabama, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Tournament Notes
- Nesterov is now a perfect 10-0 in doubles on the season with two wins on Sunday.
- Fischer has started his year 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles after coming out with three wins on the day.
- Sepulveda Garza went 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles over the weekend in just his second tournament of his Alabama career.

- Alabama is sending senior Edson Ortiz and junior Patrick Kaukovalta to the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The duo will play in the doubles draw, while No. 42 Ortiz is in the main singles draw and Kaukovalta is playing in the qualifying draw set to begin on Monday.
