The Crimson Tide senior becomes the first UA runner to earn All-America honors in back-to-back cross country championships
MADISON, Wis. – Alabama senior Alfred Chelanga finished 12th at the NCAA Men's Cross Country Championships Saturday at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wis. Chelanga crossed the finish line in a time of 29:27.4 over the 10,000-meter course on a snowy, 22-degree afternoon in the Dairy State.
"I can't say enough about the job Alfred did today," Alabama head coach Dan Waters said. "He executed the race plan to perfection and battled through some pretty tough conditions out there. I'm proud of the mental and physical strength he showed on the course today. Finishing as an All-American two years in a row is a tremendous accomplishment."
The All-America honor is the second in a row for the Nairobi, Kenya, native. He finished 37th a season ago to help the Tide men to a 14th-place team finish in Louisville, Ky. He joins Tim Broe (1996, 1999) and David Kimani (2000, 2002) as the third Tide two-time cross country All-American and is the first UA runner to earn the honor in consecutive years.
This is the 16th All-America honor for Alabama in men's cross country. In addition to Chelanga, other Tide All-Americans include German Beltran (1989), Faizal Emamaullee (1995), Tim Broe (1996, 1999), Chris Mutai (1999), David Kimani (2000, 2002), Augustus Maiyo (2007), Emmanuel Bor (2009), Tyson David (2009), Moses Kiptoo (2009), Julius Bor (2010), Gilbert Kigen (2017) and Vincent Kiprop (2017).
