TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The third-ranked Alabama men's golf team will look to continue its positive start to the season when it begins play of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate title on Monday at the par-70, 7,204 yard Old Overton Club.
The 2018 tournament will mark the 33rd year of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The event will consist of 36 holes (2 rounds) of play on Monday starting at 7:30 a.m., followed by a third and final round scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Tuesday.
This week's event will be the Tide's third tournament of the fall season, collecting an overall record of 22-5-0 over its previous two events. After finishing third in the season opener at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, Alabama recorded a fourth-place finish at the Olympia Field/Fighting Illini Invitational.
The past two tournaments UA has played this fall featured a total of 29 teams, with 21 opponents ranked or receiving votes to be ranked in the latest top-25 poll. Alabama maintains a record of 13-5-0 so far this season against top-25 competition, with all five losses coming to top-10 ranked teams in the most recent poll.
This year's Jerry Pate holds a solid field that features four squads in the 12-team field that are ranked among this week's Bushnell Golfweek Division I Coaches Poll. In addition to the third-ranked Crimson Tide, other ranked teams competing in the event include No. 14 Auburn, No. 18 UNLV and No. 19 Arkansas, along with Air Force, UAB, Army, BYU, Charlotte, Minnesota, Mississippi State and Samford.
The Tide's starting lineup will include senior Davis Riley, who will be playing in the top slot. Along with Riley will be sophomores Davis Shore, Wilson Furr and Ben Fuller, while true freshman Prescott Butler completes the Tide's starting five.
The Crimson Tide will begin its round at 7:30 a.m. CT on Hole No. 1 and will be accompanied with Samford and Army. The second round will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT with Alabama teeing off on the 10th hole.
Alabama has secured five of the last six Jerry Pate Intercollegiate titles and has collected the team title in nine of the last 12 years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017).
The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate began in 1986 and is named for one of the most successful professional golfers in Crimson Tide history. Pate continues to be an active part in the tournament as he partakes in the team selection for the tournament and presents the trophy to the winning team each year.
Since its start, the JPNI has seen some dominant names in the world of golf win its individual title. Current PGA Tour golfers, Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan have all won medalist honors at the Pate, and one of the most notable golfers of all-time, Tiger Woods, won the JPNI in 1994 competing for Stanford. David Kirkpatrick (1991), Joseph Sykora (2006), Hunter Hamrick (2009), Justin Thomas (2012) and Robby Shelton (2015) all took medalist honors for Alabama.
