CHARLESTON, S.C. - The University of Alabama's third-ranked women's golf team is tied for fourth place after the opening round of the 2011-12 season on Sunday at the Cougar Classic on the par-72, 6,205-yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club.
The Crimson Tide shot 1-under-par 287 and trail tournament leader LSU by seven strokes. Florida shot 4-under-par 284 and is in second place one shot ahead of North Carolina, who carded a 285. North Carolina State equaled the Tide's 287. Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Duke follow behind UA.
"I thought we played okay," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We have three All-Americans that played like All-Americans, so we need to get one more score and it will be pretty good. There is a lot of golf left - it's the first round of the year - and you never know what to expect."
Junior Jennifer Kirby led the way for the Crimson Tide with a 3-under-par round of 69. She shot 1-under 35 on the front side after three birdies and two bogeys before a 34 on the back side with two birdies and seven pars. Kirby is in a tie for sixth heading into Monday's second round.
Senior Brooke Pancake was right behind Kirby with a 2-under-par round of 70 and is tied for 10th position. She opened with six pars before stringing together birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes to make the turn at 3-under par. She made two birdies and three bogeys on the back nine.
Sophomore Stephanie Meadow overcame a double bogey on the first hole and a bogey on the fifth with birdies on the third, seventh, eighth and 15th holes to finish the first round in a tie for 13th place.
Sophomore Hannah Collier was the Tide's fourth and final counting score at 5-over-par 77. Junior transfer Courtney McKim shot 8-over 80.
Alabama will play with North Carolina State and Tennessee in Monday's second round.
