COLUMBIA, S.C. - Three first half South Carolina goals were too much for Alabama to overcome as the Crimson Tide fell, 4-1, Friday night at Stone Stadium. After the loss, Alabama moves to 6-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Southeastern Conference play.
The Gamecocks (9-5-0, 3-2-0 SEC) scored three goals in the first 25 minutes, on the strength of a pair of tallies by Danielle Au. USC added another goal late in the second half on a Lolly Holland penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
Alabama redshirt freshman Theresa Diederich scored her team-leading fifth goal on the season when she buried a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. The penalty kick goal was her second on the year.
Au scored in the ninth minute on a shot far post and then struck again nine minutes later when nailed a volley in the box.
Kortney Rhoades then added a third in the 24th minute when she volleyed in a shot from close range. Kayla Grimsley assisted on two of the three goals.
South Carolina outshot Alabama, 14-10, with Rhoades leading all players with four. Freshman Pia Rijsdijk paced the Tide with three shots. UA did try to rally with a 7-4 shot advantage in the second half.
