TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In its lone home race, the Alabama cross country programs swept both the team and individual titles on Friday morning at the Crimson Classic in front of 1,553 fans in attendance. Dennis Kipruto claimed the first men's crown of his career via a 23:22.1 run across the 8K course, while Doris Lemngole (19:04.8) captured her third consecutive women's individual title this season.
Victor Kiprop (23:22.3 | second) finished only two-tenths-of-a-second behind Kipruto as Hudson Hurst (23:38.1 | 10th) also recorded a top-10 time in the 8k run, while Brenda Tuwei (19:04.9 | second) crossed the finish line just a tenth-of-a-second behind Lemngole in the women's 6k race.
The No. 12-ranked Crimson Tide men needed only 59 points to take the team title, as four scoring runners for Alabama placed in the top 20. Kai Connor (23:58.4 | 17th) and Charlie Rogers (24:18.1 | 29th) rounded out UA's scoring five in the men's 8k, as the Tide finished ahead of Southeastern Conference foes Missouri (63 pts | second), Tennessee (63 pts | third) and Georgia (162 pts | fifth).
The No. 7 UA women concluded the home meet with a 28-point sweep. Franziska Drexler (19:51.7 | sixth), Addison Dorenkamp (19:53.1 | seventh) and Lilly Walters (20:14.0 | 13th) rounded out the Tide's scoring five to help secure the team crown, in dominating fashion, ahead of conference opponents Missouri (99 pts | second), South Carolina (114 pts | third) and Mississippi State (118 pts | fourth).
Head Coach Dan Waters Said
"This was a great morning of racing and a phenomenal environment to celebrate Senior Day. The course was in great condition and the fans helped push our athletes to the finish – it was a perfect environment for cross country. To not only come away with both the men's and women's team titles, but to also claim the top-two individual finishes in both races speaks directly to the preparation, by both our programs. I thought both groups ran well today in front of over 1,500 fans in attendance.
"As for our seniors, they've shown tremendous leadership, and it was great to celebrate them at home in front of friends, family, fans and their teammates."
