Alexa Cruz and Gabe Serrano combined for over 24 hours of community service this year
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Alabama track and field student-athletes senior Alexa Cruz and sophomore Gabe Serrano have been named to the 2020 Southeastern Conference Community Service Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his or her community through superior service efforts.
Cruz lad the Alabama women's track team with 14 registered community service hours. The Miami, Fla., native has touched many diverse organizations during her four years, spreading the majority of her service to Habitat for Humanity, where she helped build a home. In addition to Habitat for Humanity, Cruz has spent time with the Tim Tebow Foundation's Night to Shine, an unforgettable prom night experience for people with special needs. Cruz has also donated time to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Fundraiser Car Wash, Halloween Extravaganza and Project Angel Tree.
As a sophomore, Serrano volunteered over 10 community service hours. An active member of SAAC, Serrano sponsored Christmas for Tuscaloosa children whose parents are incarcerated through Project Angel Tree. In addition, the Weston, Fla., native spent time with families from the greater Tuscaloosa community dressing up in costumes for the annual Halloween Extravaganza.
