Last Friday, Chelangat captured the SEC Cross Country women’s individual title
NEW ORLEANS, La. – Mercy Chelangat earned Alabama women's cross country's first National Athlete of the Week honor, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Tuesday.
This is the first time in award history that a female athlete from Alabama has been named National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season. Chelangat collects the accolade after she won the Southeastern Conference women's cross country individual title last Friday in Baton Rouge.
National Athlete of the Week
- Chelangat captured the individual women's crown at the SEC Championships with a winning time of 19:46.5 in the 6k.
- The Kericho, Kenya, native waited until she passed the mile mark to post a dominant, 11.5-second victory over a talented all-conference field.
- A two-time All-SEC honoree, Chelangat, became just the fourth individual winner in UA cross country history and first since 1993.
- Chelangat paced the Crimson Tide to a runner-up finish behind league champions the Arkansas Razorbacks, marking the smallest margin between the top-two teams since 2012 and the program's best conference finish since 1994.
