
Chelangat’s Historic Season Continues with SEC Women’s Runner of the Year Honors

The Kericho, Kenya, native marks the first in Alabama women’s cross country history to to receive the award
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Individual SEC Champion Mercy Chelangat, has been named the 2020 SEC Women's Runner of the Year, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

- Chelangat is the first in Alabama women's cross country history to win SEC Runner of the Year honors.
- Last month, Chelangat captured the individual women's crown at the SEC Championships with a winning time of 19:46.5 in the 6k.
- A two-time All-SEC honoree, Chelangat, became just the fourth individual winner in UA cross country history and first since 1993.
- Chelangat paced the Crimson Tide to a runner-up finish, the program's best conference finish since 1994.
- The Kericho, Kenya, native finished in the top three in all three meets during the fall season.
