
Alabama Cross Country’s Kiprop and Wilson Earn SEC Weekly Honors

Kiprop earns SEC Men’s Runner of the Week, while Wilson named Women’s Freshman Runner of the Week
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After strong performances at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational last Friday, Alabama graduate student Vincent Kiprop earned Men's Runner of the Week while freshman Allison Wilson was named Women's Freshman Runner of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Tuesday's announcement marks the second time in both Kiprop's and Wilson's career they have been honored as the conference's weekly recipients.
SEC Men's Runner of the Week
- Kiprop earns the award on the heels of taking home the Joe Piane Notre Dame individual crown Friday, finishing first overall with a mark of 23:09.88 in the men's Blue Division 5 Mile.
- The Kericho, Kenya, native pulled away from fellow teammate graduate student Gilbert Kigen in the final mile to win the individual title by nearly four seconds.
- After missing the entire 2018 cross country season due to injury, Kiprop returned to action Friday with a new school-best and meet record.
- The 2017 SEC Cross Country Men's Runner of the Year, Kiprop, posted a 15-second personal-best in the 5 Mile.
- On Monday, Kiprop was named USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week, marking the first time since 2015 that an athlete from Alabama has been named National Athlete of the Week during the cross country season.

SEC Women's Freshman Runner of the Week
- Wilson, meanwhile, was named SEC Freshman of the week following her 69th place finish at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational, leading the Crimson Tide behind sophomore Mercy Chelangat (35th, 16:56.85) in the women's Blue Division 5k.
- In a stacked field, Wilson posted the best time among all SEC freshmen, clocking in at 17:17.52.
- The freshman started her collegiate career by leading Alabama to a first-place finish at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic on Aug. 31, where she finished first for the Crimson Tide and placed fourth overall with a time of 17:52.68 in the 5k.

The Alabama cross country teams will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the women head to Terre Haute, Ind., for the Pre-National Invitational, while the men's squad will compete in Princeton, N.J., for the Princeton Invitational.
