The Crimson Tide will open its season at the Head of the Oklahoma in what will be Putyrae's first competition at the helm
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama Rowing team is set to open its 2018-19 campaign this weekend at the Head of the Oklahoma in Oklahoma City, Okla. The event marks the first of two competitions of the fall season and the debut of new head coach Glenn Putyrae at the helm, ushering in an exciting new era for the Crimson Tide.
"I am excited, honored and anxious," Putyrae said. "Excited to be leading this team, honored to be representing the Tide and anxious to see where we are this early in the season."
It will be the first time in program history the Crimson Tide has competed in the Head of the Oklahoma, a regatta that will feature five teams Alabama will meet again later in the spring, including Central Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma, SMU and Tulsa.
"We are looking forward to racing the Head of the Oklahoma," Putyrae said. "The schedule allows for multiple races in multiple boats and lineups."
Alabama will kick things off Saturday, Sept. 29 in the Women's Collegiate 8+ (Noon CT), followed by the Women's Collegiate 4+ (3:40 p.m. CT), which will also serve as a Row for the Cure race. The Tide will conclude the day of racing in a Women's Collegiate 8+ Petite/Grand Final night sprint. The Petite Final will begin at 7:55 p.m. CT, followed by the Grand Final at 8 p.m. CT. Alabama will wrap things up on Sunday, Sept. 30, in the Women's Open 2- beginning at 8:40 a.m. CT.
"We've spent very little time in the 4's and 8's," Putyrae said, "so it will be a good opportunity for the rowers to see what kind of speed they can produce on the water in the big boats."
The Crimson Tide will conclude its fall season in November for the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn.
