Alabama Men's Golf Surges to Seventh Place at OFCC/Illini Invitational

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. - The No. 24 Alabama men's golf team carded a 287 during Saturday's second round and vaulted to seventh position after 36 holes of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. The Crimson Tide, which is tied for seventh overall with No. 2 Texas, has a two-day total of 580 (293-287) heading into Sunday's third and final round.
The Tide's second round total matched the third-lowest 18-hole score of the day by any squad in the 15-team field. Furthermore, Alabama jumped five spots, from 12th position after round one to seventh after round two, which was the biggest leap up the leaderboard by any team in the event.
The Tide was led by freshman Davis Riley, who carded a season-low round of 3-under par 67. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native finished his day with five birdies and only two bogeys on his way to the Tide's best individual round of the young season. Riley enters Sunday's final 18 holes in a tie for sixth overall with a two-day total of even par 140 (73-67).
Junior Robby Shelton comes into the final round of this weekend's event in a tie for 15th overall with a 36-hole score of 3-over par 143 (70-73) on the par-70, 7,142-yard Olympia Fields Country Club North Course. Senior captain Tom Lovelady rebounded from a 76 on Friday to shoot Alabama's second-lowest score of the day with a 2-over par 72 on Saturday. Lovelady is currently in a tie for 41st overall with an 8-over 148. Sophomore Jonathan Hardee is in a tie for 58th with a 151 (74-77), while junior Dru Love rounds out the Tide in a tie for 68th with a 153 (78-75).
Stanford, ranked No. 13 in the nation, made up an eight-stroke deficit after round one and leads the field with a two-day score of 565. The Cardinal leads by two strokes over No. 3 Florida State and Oklahoma State, which are tied for second overall with a 567. Top-ranked and tournament host Illinois (570) is in the fourth, while No. 11 Arizona State (573) rounds out the top five.
Alabama will tee off the third and final round at 7:30 a.m. CT off Hole No. 10, and will be paired with Texas and Baylor. Live stats can be found on Golfstat.com.
