STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Alabama soccer team opened its road portion of the Southeastern Conference schedule with a 2-2 draw at Mississippi State, Friday night at the MSU Soccer Field. After the day the Crimson Tide moves to 6-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.
"It is always difficult to play on the road in this league but I am glad we were able to get a point," UA assistant coach Tatum Clowney said. "We were able to get a lot of the momentum in the second half and overtime but just couldn't put it away."
Alabama scored two first half goals. Sophomore Kendall Khanna scored her third goal on the season when she buried a freshman Pia Rijsdijk pass from across the box in the 20th minute.
Rijsdijk set up another goal just 11 minutes later when Theresa Diederich tallied her fourth goal of the season to give Alabama a 2-1 lead. Diederich followed up a Rijsdijk shot that rattled off the crossbar for the goal.
Mississippi State scored just three minutes into the match and then evened the score in the 35th minute as all four combined goals were scored in the first half.
Alabama outshot Mississippi State 15-14, as Rijsdijk led all players with eight shots, putting five on frame. Sophomore Shanna Brooks allowed two goals and made five saves, playing the full 110 minutes.
The Tide was without Hermann Trophy candidate goalkeeper Justine Bernier, freshman forward Janea Simson and head coach Todd Bramble due to red cards in the previous match.
Alabama will close out its road trip in the Magnolia State when it heads to Oxford to face Mississippi. The two teams will play on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m.
