TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's golf team released its 2011-12 schedule on Friday that gives the Crimson Tide a chance to square off with some of the best competition in the nation.
"We are excited about the challenges that this year's schedule will present," head coach Mic Potter said. "Our schedule will give this team a great opportunity to develop throughout the season. We will have a chance to compete against some of the best teams in the country, and prove that we have what it takes when the postseason rolls around."
The Crimson Tide, fresh of their sixth straight trip to the NCAA Championships, opens the fall slate at the Cougar Classic at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Charleston, S.C., on September 11-13. It will be the first trip to the Cougar Classic since a second-place finish in 2008.
The Tide then makes their annual trek to Franklin, Tenn., to play Vanderbilt's Legends Golf Club on Sept. 23-25. But instead of competing in the Mason Rudolph Women's Championship, it will be the Fall Preview. The Crimson Tide won the Fall Preview a season ago at the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas.
Alabama will also look to defend its title at the Tar Heel Invitational on October 7-9 at the UNC Finley Golf Course. The Tide set a tournament record with a 28-under-par total a season ago with Brooke Pancake capturing medalist honors. UA then closes the fall slate with the Pac-10/SEC Challenge at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., on Oct. 21-23.
The Tide opens its spring slate with the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate at English Turn Golf Club in New Orleans, La. UA finished second there a year ago with Stephanie Meadow capturing medalist honors. The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate is new to the Alabama slate and is scheduled for March 2-4 at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
A visit to the Mark Bostick Golf Club in Gainesville, Fla., is next for the Crimson Tide at the Gator Women's Invitational on March 16-18. The Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic follows as Alabama visits Athens, Ga., with the hopes of defending its 2011 title at the University of Georgia Golf Club on March 30-April 1.
After winning the first SEC Championship in school history in 2010 on home soil at the NorthRiver Yacht Club and a runner-up showing last year at Auburn, Alabama will travel to Arkansas' Blessing Golf Club on April 20-22 in search of the conference title.
NCAA regional play begins on May 10 followed by the NCAA Championships at Vanderbilt's Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn., starting on May 22. Alabama has reached the NCAA Championships in each of head coach Mic Potter's six seasons.
Alabama returns three of its top four golfers from last year's team that finished eighth at the NCAA Championships and third in the final NGCA Coaches' Poll. Returning starters Brooke Pancake, Jennifer Kirby and Stephanie Meadow will form one of the best trios in the nation.
