BRYAN, Texas -The Alabama women's golf team shot 9-over-par 297 in the third round of the 2011 NCAA Golf Championship at the par-72, 6,260-yard Traditions Club on Friday.
The Crimson Tide shot 9-over on the back nine to spoil a promising round. Alabama is 12th at the conclusion of play on Friday at 37-over-par 901. Due to a one hour, 50 minute lightning delay late in the afternoon, the second flight was not able to finish, leaving six teams still on the course when darkness fell.
UCLA continues to lead the tournament at the end of play on Friday. The Bruins are 13-over par, including 5-over par in Friday's partial round. The Bruins, along with second-place Purdue (+19) and third-place LSU (+26) are on holes 14-17 of the third round.
The conclusion of the third round will take place at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Teams will then be re-paired and the final round will get underway at 8:30 a.m., a delay of 30 minutes from the originally scheduled start time.
"With roughly four holes to play, we were right around par and you have to be able to bear down and finish better than that," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We played a lot of loose shots coming in, and you can't do that in this tournament."
Alabama made the turn at even par as a team but saw the closing stretch of holes bump them down the leaderboard. The ninth hole, which was the Tide's finishing hole, was especially tough for UA with four bogeys and a double bogey.
Brooke Pancake and Camilla Lennarth paced the Crimson Tide with rounds of 72 and 73. Pancake was 3-under par through 15 holes but a double bogey on No. 7 and a bogey on the ninth left her at 9-over 225 after 54 holes of play.
Lennarth carded four birdies on the day, but a bogey on the ninth hole gave her a round of 73. She is the Crimson Tide's low individual after three rounds at 8-over 224.
Stephanie Meadow struggled down the stretch with four bogeys and a double bogey on her closing nine to finish with a 77. The double bogey on No. 9 was extremely unlucky as her hybrid into the green caught the cart path to the left of the hole three times, resulting in an unplayable lie. Meadow is 10-over 226 after three rounds.
Hannah Collier fought off two early double bogeys on her opening nine holes and shot 1-under on the back nine to finish at 3-over 75 for her best round of the tournament. Jennifer Kirby shot 78 but made three birdies on the back nine.
The Crimson Tide are also waiting on the results of the final flight of the day that went off the 10th hole on Friday afternoon that included Florida, Tennessee and California. The final positioning of those teams will determine what time UA will tee off for Saturday's final round.
