CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Alabama women's golf team was overtaken by LSU in the final round of the Tar Heel Invitational on the par-72, 6,285-yard UNC Finley Golf Course on Sunday to finish second.
The Crimson Tide shot a 3-over-par round of 291 as the Tigers carded 1-under 287 for the four-shot win. LSU finished with a 54-hole total of 8-under-par 856 while Alabama closed at 4-under 860. Things fell apart for the Tide on the back nine. After making the turn at 6-under par as a team, the Tide shot nine-over par on the back nine.
"We had about a 10-shot lead at one point today and it is certainly disappointing that we lost that," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "We have to keep learning from it, and get ourselves in positions where we are ready to handle the national championships."
Auburn fired the low round of the day with a 4-under 284 to move up to third place with a total of 3-under 861. North Carolina finished fourth at 2-under-par 862 with North Carolina State rounding out the top five at 869. Tennessee and Georgia both tied for sixth at 6-over 870.
Senior Brooke Pancake shot her sixth straight sub-par round at the Tar Heel Invitational, a tournament she won last year with an 11-under-par total of 206. Pancake carded a 3-under-par 69 in the final round and finished tied for second. In her last six rounds at the UNC Finley Golf Course, Pancake has shot an impressive 19-under par.
Hannah Collier got off to another blazing start in Sunday's first round, shooting 3-under on the front side to move to 12-under par. But that is where the trouble began for the sophomore, who was in contention for a tournament title for the first time.
Collier made bogey on No. 10 and double bogey on the 11th. After two pars, she finished with four bogeys and a double bogey in her last five holes to card a 45 on the back nine and shoot 78 in the final round. She would finish 10th at 3-under-par 213, which is still career-low 54-hole score.
Stephanie Meadow fired her best round of the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 that included five birdies and four bogeys. She tied for 37th at 6-over 222.
The problem for the Tide once again on Sunday was finding that fourth score to complete the round. Jennifer Kirby was the third score for Alabama with a 2-over-par 74 to finish in a tie for 37th place at 6-over 222. Johanna Tillström counted for the Tide with a 5-over 77 with Collier's 78 dropped for UA. Tillström finished tied for 50th at 224.
Alabama will close out the fall schedule at the Pac-12/SEC Mercedes-Benz Challenge on Oct. 21-23 at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn.
