CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Alabama women's golf team shot even par on Saturday in the second round of the Tar Heel Invitational on the par-72, 6,285-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
The Crimson Tide were caught from behind by LSU who carded a 3-under-par round of 285. Both teams enter Sunday's final round at 7-under-par 569. North Carolina is in third place at even-par 576 with Auburn in fourth at 1-over 577 and North Carolina State in fifth at 4-over 580.
"It was kind of an average day today when you have to count two 76s," Alabama head coach Mic Potter said. "An unbelievable round by Hannah (Collier) and a solid round by Brooke (Pancake) kind of offset those. I figure we got our bad round out of the way and hopefully we will play better tomorrow. We just have to continue to do what we do, and that is to play one shot at a time."
Sophomore Hannah Collier fired a career-low round for the second straight day with a 6-under 66. She vaulted in to the tournament lead at 9-under 135, which is also a career-best for 36 holes. Collier carded five birdies on the front nine to post a 31. She got to 7-under for the round after birdies on the 11th and 14th holes before a bogey on the 15th and three pars to close her round.
"I've been expecting Hannah to have a round like this all year because she hits so many good shots and gives herself so many good chances," Potter said. "It is more a matter of her just getting confidence. She is very capable of shooting those kinds of scores all the time."
Collier shot her first career round in the 60s during Friday's first round with a 3-under-par 69. She was in a tie for fourth place when play began on Saturday. Collier has 10 brides and an eagle to go with only three bogeys over the first 36 holes.
Senior Brooke Pancake shot her fifth straight sub-par round at the Tar Heel Invitational, a tournament she won last year with an 11-under-par total of 206. Pancake carded a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday and remains in a tie for fourth place entering Sunday's final round.
The problem for the Crimson Tide in the second round was finding a third and fourth score to go along with Collier and Pancake. Unfortunately, Alabama counted a pair of 4-over-par 76s on Saturday from junior Jennifer Kirby and true freshman Johanna Tillström. Stephanie Meadow was the Tide's drop score with a 5-over-par 77.
