CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The University of Alabama's Jennifer Kirby defeated Sara-Maude Juneau 1-up in the Round of 16 on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinal round of the 2010 U.S. Women's Amateur at the Charlotte Country Club.
The No. 25 seeded Kirby, who defeated No. 8 seed Doris Chen 3&2 earlier in the day, will play No. 17 seed Kristen Park on Friday at 9 a.m. (CDT). Kirby is one of only eight golfers, from the initial field of 156, left with a shot at the title.
On Thursday, Kirby played a grand total of 34 holes at 3-under-par in her two matches, finishing off Chen rather easily in the morning before having to fight tooth and nail against the No. 9 seed Juneau in the afternoon.
After winning two of the first three holes in her match versus Juneau to go 2-up, Kirby proceeded to lose holes No. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 to allow Juneau to take a 3-up advantage heading into the back nine. Kirby fought back, claiming holes No. 11, 12 and 13 to pull even in the match before reclaiming the lead with a par on hole No. 16. Both players tied the final two holes with pars to secure Kirby's 1-up victory.
Kirby never trailed in her match versus Chen, jumping out to a 1-up lead with a birdie at hole No. 1 before coasting to the 3&2 victory.
