
Swimming and Diving Sweeps Meet at Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Alabama Swimming and Diving teams swept their competition in Cleveland, Miss. Saturday in dominating fashion.
The Crimson Tide women picked up three wins in a quad meet while the men won two in their tri-meet. Alabama’s women downed host school Delta State 97-41, Centenary 93-43 and New Orleans 101-36. The men beat DSU 82-55 and Centenary 91-44.
“We had a solid meet, one that we can build on going forward,” Alabama head coach Eric McIlquham said. “We came in here looking to stand up and compete hard and we accomplished that. “
The Tide women opened the meet with a five second win in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Allyson Angle, senior Erin Sparks, freshman Ida Persson and junior Vanessa Von der Heyde combined to post a 1:45.64.
Sparks and Angle were first and second in the 100 backstroke at 57.84 and 58.62 respectively. Sparks and Von der Heyde battled it out in the 50 freestyle, touching a 24.14 and 24.18 respectively. Angle won the 200 backstroke by a wide margin, touching at 2:06.49.
Sophomore Elle St. Charles and freshman Kate Gray took first and second in the 200 butterfly, with St. Charles touching at 2:06.07 for the win. Gray and Richards switched places in the 100 freestyle with Gray touching at 53.30 for the win.
Sophomore Julie Richards won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.90. Freshman Britney Busch won the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall at 1:07.49. Freshman Paige Troyan and Busch were first and second in the 200 breaststroke with Troyan touching at 2:25.31 for the win.
Freshmen Lauren Dunn and Baylee Ellson took the top two spots off the one-meter board and then reversed order on the three-meter. Dunn scored a season best 279.22 to win the one-meter while Baylee’s 258.45, also a season best, was tops off the three-meter.
Sophomore Maggie Zeblewski and freshman Samantha Lugar turned in the top times in the 200 IM at 1:11.20 and 2:13.21 respectively.
The Tide men went one-two in the opening relay with the quartet of junior Chris Perry, sophomore Luke Boutwell, freshman Catalin Cosma and senior Mike Jones coming away with the win at 1:34.35.
Sophomore Drew Finelli and freshman Daniel Rozick took first and second in the 1650 freestyle, with Finelli posting a 16:12.78 for the win. In the 50 freestyle Perry and freshman James Edward were first and second, with Perry winning at 22.03.
Jones won the 100 backstroke with a 52.35 while Boutwell took first in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.11. Junior Eduardo Ramirez and sophomore Clint McClendon led the charge in the 200 butterfly with Ramirez coming out on top with a time of 1:54.32.
Boulden and Boutwell went one-two in the 200 breaststroke again with Boulden’s 2:08.44 taking the win. Freshman Daniel Armstrong and Boulden swept the 200 backstroke, with Armstrong winning at 1:56.51.
Sophomore Aaron Fleshner continued his winning ways, taking first off the one and three-meter boards with season best scores. He posted season best scores of 380.55 off the one-meter and 426.38 off the three-meter. Freshman Adam Booher was second off both boards.
Alabama stays on the road for its next meet, facing defending NCAA Champions Auburn Nov. 16 on the Plains.
