Ol' Colony to Host U.S. Amateur Qualifying Wednesday; Six Tide Golfers Competing

Several University of Alabama golf team members will attempt to qualify for the 105th United States Amateur Championship on Wednesday, July 20th. Qualifying will be held at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa.
Seventy-five players will compete for three spots. The U.S. Amateur Championship will be held August 22-28 at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania.
Six Tide golfers, Gator Todd, Mark Harrell, Lance Walker, Joseph Sykora, Matt Hughes and Matthew Swan will play in the qualifier. Swan from Montgomery, is an incoming freshman who finished tied for 2nd at the Southern Amateur last week. Earlier this summer, he helped lead the United States to the World Junior Golf Team Championship.
Todd had a successful first year as a Tide golfer in 2005. He competed in 11 tournaments and had a 73.91 scoring average. Earlier this summer, he finished 3rd in the Alabama State Amateur.
Another freshman in 2005, Harrell, also played well for the Tide this past season. He competed in 13 tournaments and had a stroke average of 73.38.
Walker will be a 5th year senior this season. In 2003, he teamed with former Tide golfer Wesley Pate to capture the Alabama State Four Ball Championship.
Sykora, a Daphne native, qualified for the United States Public Links Championship earlier this summer.
Hughes redshirted in his first season at Alabama in 2005. The Dalton, Georgia native was the 2004 Georgia AAAA State High School Champion.
The golfers will play 36 holes on Wednesday. Play will begin at 7:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Admission is free to the public.
