Men's Golf Has Tough Opening Round at Carpet Capital

DALTON, GA. – The University of Alabama is in 14th place of 18 teams after Friday’s opening round of the Carpet Capital Classic. The tournament, which features a field of nine top 25 teams, is being held at The Farm Golf Club, a par 72 layout and is hosted by Georgia Tech.
Alabama shot 303 for the round and is 15 over par. Florida leads all teams after 18 holes, finishing the first of three days at six under par, 282. Georgia State is next (284), followed by Duke (288), top-ranked Georgia (289), Texas Tech (292), Clemson (293), East Tennessee State (295), Augusta State (297), North Carolina State (297), Tennessee South Carolina and Georgia Southern (300), Auburn (301), Alabama (303), Oklahoma (304), Georgia Tech (305), TCU (307) and Vanderbilt (310).
Georgia’s Chris Kirk had the day’s low round and is the tournament leader. He shot five under par Friday, 67, and is a stroke ahead of three players, Duke’s Clark Klaasen, Clemson’s David May and Florida’s James Vargas.
Mark Harrell had Alabama’s best round. He’s T-19th after finishing the day at one over par, 73. Alabama’s other four golfers competing include Joseph Sykora who is T-49th at four over par, 76, and three men among a tie at 57th, Matthew Swan, Gator Todd and Stewart Whitt who all shot five over, 77.
Second round play begins Saturday and the final round will be contested on Sunday.
