BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference released its SEC Athlete of the Week honors today for the third week of the cross country season. Freshman Sara Vaughn earned her first honors at Alabama being named Athlete of the Week and Freshman of the Week.
Vaughn became only the third University of Alabama female cross country runner to earn SEC female cross country athlete of the week honor (Aly mills, 2000; Julia Hicks 2005). Vaughn also becomes the second freshman in as many years to earn SEC Freshman female cross country Athlete of the Week honors. Haley Moody earned SEC Freshman cross country Athlete of the Week honors last fall.
Vaughn ran 17:17.95 over the course of 5,000 meters at the 20th Annual Crimson Classic and led the Crimson Tide to the team title. She ran the fastest time by an Alabama women's cross country freshman since 2000 when Ashley Labudde covered the challenging course in 17:04.
Vaughn currently holds the fastest time in the 5k in the SEC by four seconds and leads all freshmen in the SEC by 17 seconds.
Her mark ranks No. 9 all-time on the Harry Pritchett Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala. and ranks as the No. 15 5k time run all-time by an Alabama woman on any course.
