Volleyball Head Coach Judy Green announced the addition of Kayla Schmidt for the upcoming season on Tuesday. Schmidt, who just finished her second year at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas, guided the Buccaneers to the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship.
"I'm excited about Kayla joining our program," said Green. "She brings a level of experience we are in great need of. That experience is going to be very beneficial to our team. She knows how to win at a high level, and I'm happy she'll be with us in January."
Schmidt brings quite an impressive list of accolades with her to the Capstone to go along with her national championship. She was named the 2008 American Volleyball Coaches Association Two-Year Colleges National Player of the Year and NJCAA National Player of the Year. In addition, the Bellville, Texas native garnered Most Valuable Player honors in the national tournament and was named an AVCA First-Team All American.
For the 2008 season, Schmidt ranked third nationally in assist with an average of 11.69 per set. In addition, she added 1.51 digs and 1.21 kills with a hitting percentage of .375 per frame. In the championship match against Arkansas - Fort Smith, Schmidt tallied 65 assists and 19 digs.
