Krystal Rivers Named SEC Volleyball Co-Freshman of the Week
Rivers averaged 3.62 kills with a .431 hitting percentage against Georgia and Kentucky
TUSCALOOSA, ALA. - Alabama redshirt freshman middle blocker Krystal Rivers (Birmingham, Ala.) was named the Southeastern Conference Volleyball Co-Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. This week's honor marks the second straight and third of the season for Rivers.
Rivers averaged 3.62 kills per set with a .431 hitting percentage, as the Tide posted a SEC road win at Georgia, 3-1, on Friday, before suffering a loss to No. 15 Kentucky, 3-1, on Sunday. Rivers paced the Crimson Tide with 29 kills in the eight sets, while finishing the weekend with eight total blocks (1.00 bps) to average 4.38 points per set in the two matches.
In the four-set win over Georgia, Rivers was nearly unstoppable as she tallied 14 kills on 18 attempts with no errors for a career-high .778 hitting percentage. She also added five blocks on the defensive end with one solo and four assisted blocks. In the Kentucky match, Rivers paced the Tide with 15 kills while hitting .242. Rivers also added three blocks and an ace against the Wildcats.
This season Rivers leads the Crimson Tide with 3.62 kills per set to rank sixth in the SEC, and she ranks third in the conference and 10th nationally with a .442 hitting percentage. Additionally, her 4.30 points per set are fifth in the SEC, while her 0.85 blocks per set rank 17th in the conference.
Missouri's Carly Kan was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Georgia's Jasmine Eatmon was the SEC Defensive Player of the Week. Rivers shared the freshman of the week honors with Mississippi State's Kimmy Gardiner.
Rivers and the Crimson Tide return to the court on Friday night when Alabama welcomes Mississippi State to Foster Auditorium. First serve for the SEC match is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
