OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Alabama volleyball team posted its first Southeastern Conference weekend sweep of the year with a strong performance in a 3-0 (30-21, 30-12, 30-27) win over Ole Miss on Sunday.

The victory was the Tide’s first this season on a Sunday snapping a three-match losing skid on the “Day of Rest”. With the completion of the sweep, Alabama improved to 16-5, 6-4 in the SEC. Bama also extended its current win streak to 11 consecutive victories over the Lady Rebels (10-12, 2-8 SEC).

“It is always a great feeling to get a win on the road in the SEC,” said UA head coach Judy Green. “I thought we got a very strong and consistent effort all weekend. We looked really good on offense today and I thought we did an excellent job of siding out. Brigitte Slack did an outstanding job of making the right sets to get our hitters in great situations.”

The Crimson Tide grabbed an advantage in the opening frame leading 15-9. The Lady Rebels battled back and pulled to within three points (22-19) before Alabama closed the frame with an 8-2 run to earn the 30-21 victory. Both team’s offenses ran efficiently with UA out-hitting UM, .474 to .303.

Game two saw both squads take turns with the lead before Bama began to get things rolling. Alabama moved a three-point edge (8-5) to a double-digit margin cruising to the 30-12 win. UA’s defense forced the Lady Rebels into a -.097 hitting performance. The Tide improved to 18-3 in the second game of matches this year with the win.

Ole Miss rallied to start the third stanza keeping things close throughout. The score was knotted several times with the last coming at 27 all, but Alabama proved too strong scoring the final three points to earn the match sweep, 30-27.

Freshman setter Brigitte Slack posted her second career double-double finishing with 34 assists and a team-leading 10 digs in the contest. Slack also recorded a pair of aces and had five kills and no hitting miscues in seven attempts (.714).

Senior All-American candidate Erin Heffner made it 35 consecutive double figure kill performances recording a team best 15 kills in the match. Heffner also tallied a career high six aces on the day. Junior Kelley Potter finished with 10 kills while libero Jessica Yearout shared team honors with 10 digs. Rachael Green led the Bama front row with six blocks.

Alabama hit a solid .370 for the match including just three hitting errors in the first two games. In addition to Slack’s errorless hitting performance, senior Julie Farley also committed no errors recording seven kills in 11 swings (.636).

Nikki Hill recorded 11 kills to pace the Ole Miss offense that finished with a .172 hitting percentage. Alabama out-dug (36-31) and out-blocked (7-2) the Lady Rebels.

The Crimson Tide continues its current SEC road swing next weekend when Bama visits SEC West leading Arkansas (Oct. 29) and LSU (Oct. 31). Alabama’s match against the Tigers next Sunday will be televised live by Fox Sports Net South at 2 p.m.
