Laura Steiner Selected as the SEC Volleyball Freshman of the Week

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama outside hitter, Laura Steiner (Fort Collins, Colo.), was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Steiner helped the Crimson Tide post a 1-1 record on the road last week, as she led the team with 33 kills and 4.12 kills per set, in matches against South Carolina and LSU.

Alabama opened the week with a 3-1 victory at South Carolina as Steiner led the Tide with 14 kills in the match. Steiner posted a .379 hitting percentage, as UA had a four-set season-high hitting percentage of .336 against the Gamecocks. In the second set of that match, Steiner had a team-high five kills as the Tide posted a .593 hitting percentage without committing a hitting error.

Against LSU, Steiner had a career-high 19 kills to lead the Tide, while posting a career-high 52 attempts. With just three errors in the match, she had a .308 hitting percentage against the Tigers. Steiner had four kills in the third set against LSU, as Bama hit .621 in the frame without a hitting error. Following the career-high performance against the Tigers, Steiner finished the weekend with a .333 hitting percentage (33k-6e/81ta).

For the season, Steiner is 12th in the SEC with 3.12 kills per set, with a .214 hitting percentage in her first collegiate season. During conference matches only, she averages 3.18 kills per set.
 
Steiner is the second freshman on the Crimson Tide volleyball team to garner SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season. Freshman setter Sierra Wilson was named the freshman of the week on Sept. 17. Joining Steiner for weekly SEC honors this week was the player of the week, Christine Hartmann of Kentucky and the defensive player of the week, Ellen Mullins of Tennessee.

Alabama returns to SEC action on Friday, Oct. 19, when it hosts nationally ranked Florida for the annual Tuscaloosa Toyota Power of Pink match. First serve between the Tide and Gators is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, at Foster Auditorium.
