Crystal Hudson

The University of Alabama volleyball team returns home Wednesday night after a successful 4-0 road trip to face in-state foe Alabama A&M at 7:00 in the CAVE. The Tide (8-1) is riding an eight match win streak heading into the contest equaling its best streak in 2004 and the longest since taking 12 consecutive matches during the 1995 season.

The contest will mark the second ever meeting between the opponents with UA defeating the Bulldogs 3-0 last season.

The Tide is coming off of a tournament championship last weekend in the UWM Invitational. The Tide defeated Toledo, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin-Milwaukee to claim the title. Jessica Yearout (St. Maries, Id.) took MVP honors for Alabama posting a 6.10 digs per game average over the three matches. Crystal Hudson (Hueytown, Ala.) and Bridget Fuentez (Tomball, Texas) also nabbed all-tournament honors.

Heading into Wednesday night’s contest, Alabama leads the SEC in hitting percentage, assists per game and kills per game as well as ranking second in digs per game. The Tide’s 17.46 kills per game mark ranks fifth in the nation.

Individually, Alabama is led by Crystal Hudson. Hudson leads UA in kills (91) and blocks per game (1.39).  The sophomore middle blocker’s .460 hitting percentage leads the SEC and ranks ninth in the nation. Brigitte Slack (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) is dishing out 13.96 assists per contests, a mark that would shatter her own school record, and ranks ninth in the country.

Five-time defending SWAC Champion Alabama A&M has struggled out of the gate this season with a 2-5 record, but they are 2-2 in their most recent outing at the Memphis Invitational.

Alexandria Brazelton leads the Bulldogs with 69 kills while Tameeka Thompson has a team best 57 digs.

Kara Jerden ranks second on A&M’s squad in both kills (65) and digs (53).  Admission to the match is free. Fans can tune into the radio broadcast in the Tuscaloosa area on WVUA 90.7 FM.
