Rocket Classic Match Notes Get Acrobat Reader

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Alabama volleyball team will travel to Toledo, Ohio for three matches in the Rocket Classic, hosted by the University of Toledo. The Crimson Tide, which enters the week with a 4-3 record, will open the tournament against the host Toledo Rockets (3-3) on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT from Savage Arena. Alabama will then play a pair of matches on Saturday against the No. 25-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (4-3) at 11 a.m. CT and the Penn Quakers (2-1) at 4 p.m. CT.

McQuaid Gets UA's First Triple-Double Since 1999
Andrea McQuaid recorded the first Alabama triple-double since Oct. 1, 1999, when she had 13 kills, 29 assists and 17 digs against SMU on Sept. 3. The 13 kills and 17 digs were career-highs for the sophomore transfer, as she hit a team-high .414 in the match. Since the program restarted in 1989, McQuaid's triple-double is just the fourth in the last 23 years. She is the first player to have a triple-double with kills, assists and digs. Shelly Adamcik (1999), Nina Foster (1994) and Jennifer Miller (1992) had triple-doubles in kills, digs and total blocks.

Scouting The Toledo Rockets
Toledo enters the week with a 3-3 record after dropping all three matches last week. The Rockets suffered losses to Cleveland State (3-0), St. John's (3-1) and Michigan State (3-0) at the Spartan Showcase. The Rockets average 14.40 kills per set while hitting .255 as a team. UT averages 1.20 aces, 13.50 digs and 1.75 blocks per set. Six players on the Toledo roster have at least 25 kills this season to provide a balanced attack. Becca Reidy leads the team with 61 kills (3.05 ps) and is fourth on the team with a .287 hitting percentage. Lauren Rafdal averages 3.11 kills per set to lead the team. Sondra Parys (2.45), Jordan Kielty (2.42), Dakota Harkins (2.40), Bethany Irwin (2.18) and Bailey Blank (2.14) average more than two kills per set. Kassie Kadera has 250 assists to average 12.50 per set and McCall Paynter averages 3.15 digs per set to lead the team. Friday night's match will be the fourth between UA and Toledo, the Tide leads the series 2-1.

Scouting The Ohio State Buckeyes
The Ohio State Buckeyes enter this week's tournament with a 4-3 record and are ranked No. 25 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. OSU is coming off a 0-3 week with losses to three ranked opponents in No. 10 Hawaii (3-0), No. 22 UCLA, (3-1) and No. 23 Long Beach State (3-2), in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic. The Buckeyes are hitting .210 as a team while holding opponents to a .145 hitting mark. OSU is strong at the net as they average 2.50 blocks per set. Ohio State is led by Emily Dans and Mari Hole whom average 3.48 and 3.52 kills per set respectively. Amanda Peterson leads the team with 183 assists (9.63 per set) and Sarah Mignin has a team-high 97 digs (4.22 dps). When UA and OSU play on Saturday, it will mark the fourth meeting between the two schools. Ohio State has won all three meetings in the all-time series.

Scouting The Penn Quakers
The Penn Quakers enter the Rocket Classic with a 2-1 record after opening the season with wins over Temple (3-1) and La Salle (3-0) and a loss to Villanova (3-1) in the in the Big 5 Tournament. The Quakers are hitting .220 while averaging 12.3 kills per set. Lauren Martin leads the team with 3.45 kills per set and is second on the squad with a .354 hitting percentage. Emma White is second on the team with 3.00 kills per set and Amanda Pacheco averages 2.45 kills per set with a team-high .407 hitting mark. Megan Connolly leads the team with 63 assists (5.73 aps) while Kristin Schoonover has 51 assists (4.64 aps). Dani Sheperd has a team-high 50 digs to average 4.55 per set.
This will be the first meeting between Alabama and Penn in volleyball.

Looking Back at Last Week
Alabama posted a 1-3 record last week, including a five set loss at Samford on Tuesday and a 1-2 record in the SMU Doubletree Invitational. The Crimson Tide's only win of the week was a 3-0 victory over Lamar to open the Doubletree Invitational. The Tide lost both five set matches in extra points, falling to Samford, 17-15, and SMU, 18-16, in the fifth set. Alabama set a school record for digs in a match with 122 against SMU on Saturday.

Other Notables From Last Week
In the match versus SMU, Kayla Fitterer had 94 attempts, the second most in a single match in school history. Against SMU, Kelsey Anderson recorded a career-high 33 digs, the third most in a single match in school history. Stephanie Riley recorded a double-double in assists and digs in all three matches of the Doubletree Invitational. Leigh Moyer posted a .700 hitting percentage with eight kills and one error on 10 attempts against Lamar. Moyer led the Tide with eight total blocks in the tournament. Cortney Warren had 34 kills in the Doubletree Invitational to average 2.83 kills per set in the tournament. Warren hit .264, committing 10 errors on 91 swings, in the tournament to lead the Tide.

K-Fitt is a Double-Double Machine
Kayla Fitterer has reached double digits in kills and digs in all seven UA matches this season. The seven double-doubles this season brings the junior outside hitter's total to 19 for her career. This season she is averaging 19.1 kills and 14.4 digs per match. She ranks second in the SEC with 4.62 kills per set, with a .262 hitting percentage, and averages 3.48 digs per set as well.

Coach Allen Closes in on 500 Victories
In his 20th season as a college head coach, first-year UA coach Ed Allen has a 4-3 record in 2011 to bring his career record to 498-186 (.728), just two wins shy of 500 victories. In five seasons at Division I Tulsa (2006-10) he collected 133 wins, in three seasons at Division II Presbyterian College (2003-05) he had 94 wins and in 11 seasons at Division III Anderson University (1992-2002) he had 267 victories. Allen entered the season ranked 28th among active Division I coaches in career victories.

Riley In Bama's Top-10 for Career Assists
Senior setter Stephanie Riley has 169 assist this season to bring her career total at Alabama to 1,459. She had 66 assists in the Doubletree Invitational and passed Kayla Schmidt (2009-10) for eighth all-time at Alabama. Riley will need 165 assists to pass Kenna Milner (2001-02) for seventh all-time.

Next Week For The Tide
After completing play in the Rocket Classic, the Crimson Tide will return home to start Southeastern Conference play. Alabama opens SEC action on Friday, Sept. 16 against the Arkansas Razorbacks at 7 p.m. at Foster Auditorium. The week wraps up with a 1:30 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 18 against the LSU Tigers.
