TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama volleyball team opened its 2013 training camp on Friday morning with an 8:30 a.m., practice at Foster Auditorium. The Crimson Tide will return to Foster Auditorium at 2:30 p.m., this afternoon for its second practice session of the fall training camp.
"We tried to spend a lot of time on ball control activities," third-year head coach Ed Allen said. "We want to be a team that extends rallies, so we spent a lot of time digging and passing balls today. We're real pleased with the athletes we have in the gym and look forward to seeing where this team can progress to."
Alabama opened camp with 12 players on the roster, including two seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and a trio of freshmen. The Tide returns nine players from last year's 18-14 squad, which includes senior setter/outside hitter Andrea McQuaid and senior defensive specialist Kelsey Melito.
Sophomore setter Sierra Wilson returns for her second season at the Capstone, after recording 1,293 assists during her freshman campaign. Wilson posted the 10th most assists in an Alabama single season and finished the 2013 season 46th in the country and second in the Southeastern Conference with 10.87 assists per set.
"It felt great to get back on the court today," Wilson said. "The team was ready to go and we've been waiting all summer for this day. We've been working out hard and practicing hard and we're ready for some structured stuff. We're excited to get the season started."
The Tide also returns junior middle blocker Katherine White, sophomore defensive specialist Kryssi Daniels, who led the SEC with 51 aces in 2013, sophomore outside hitters Laura Steiner and Mattie Weldy, and sophomore defensive specialist Sherrill Dahlmann. Steiner is the Tide's returning kills leader, after posting 306 as a freshman to finish 13th in the SEC with 3.12 kills per set last season.
The morning practice session consisted of individual oriented drills, including transition hitting, setting, passing and defensive work. The afternoon practice will include team structured drills.
Redshirt freshman Krystal Rivers will look to contribute this season after sitting out the 2013 campaign. The three newcomers include junior college transfer Caitlin Bernardin, a junior who played at Bakersfield College last season and true freshmen Bria Green (Carson, Calif.) and Brittany Thomas (Chandler, Ariz.)
Alabama opens the season on the road on Friday, Aug. 30, when the team travels to the West Point, N.Y., to compete in the Black Knights Invitational hosted by Army. The Tide opens the tournament against Seton Hall on Friday, before battling Washington State and Army on Saturday.
UA fans will have the opportunity to enjoy 19 women's volleyball matches in Foster Auditorium this season, including the nine matches of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash which features UT-Martin, South Alabama, Nicholls State, and Arkansas State.
The Crimson Tide will play 14 home matches and open SEC play against at home against Kentucky on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. The final home weekend of the season has the Tide hosting Mississippi on Nov. 22 and Tennessee on Nov. 24.
