TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama women's volleyball team opened its 2012 training camp this morning with an 8:30 a.m., practice session at Foster Auditorium. The Crimson Tide will return to Foster Auditorium at 2:30 p.m. for its second practice session of the fall training camp.
"Today's practice was great," second-year head coach Ed Allen said. "The kids worked hard and they listened. It was a moderate practice that didn't include a lot of dynamic movement, but focused a lot on serving, passing and digging, which are important elements to being able to compete at this level. We did a lot of explaining of our system and what our expectations are."
Alabama opened camp with 15 players, including two seniors, five juniors, two sophomores and six freshmen. The Tide returns six players from last season, including senior outside hitter Kayla Fitterer, who led the team in kills last season. Fitterer is 11 kills away from becoming the 13th player in Alabama school history to reach the 1,000 mark. The Tide also returns senior Leigh Moyer, juniors Cristina Arenas, Andrea McQuaid and Kelsey Melito along with sophomore Katherine White.
"It feels good to get started," Fitterer said. "It's the first time the whole team has been together with the coaches. It's the best first session we've had since I've been here. We're only working on ball control and serving, but with everyone together we look really good to start."
The morning practice session consisted of individual oriented drills, including transition hitting, setting, passing and defensive work. The afternoon practice will include team structured drills.
"We have nine new faces, so we will spend the next two weeks looking to establish a foundation that we can build upon throughout the season," Allen said. "We have a lot to do over the next couple weeks and expect a significant number of the nine new players to contribute right away. With that happening in two weeks, there's a lot of ground to cover in a short time period, and we have a lot to teach those new players what it's like to compete at this level.
The nine newcomers include three transfers in Yukie Futami (Miami Dade College), Kanesha Burch (Florida State College at Jacksonville) and Pricilla Duke-Ezeji (UCLA). Additionally, six freshmen, Kryssi Daniels, Mattie Weldy, Sierra Wilson, Sherrill Dahlmann, Laura Steiner, and Krystal Rivers, took part in their first official collegiate practice.
"One thing we have to focus on is getting to know each other, both on and off the court," junior setter/outside hitter Andrea McQuaid said. "With nine new players and six returners, we need to know each other well. When were in the gym, we need to hit it hard and go as hard as we can all the time."
Alabama opens the season on the road on Friday, Aug. 24 when the team travels to the Beanpot Classic in Boston, Mass. The Tide's first match is against Holy Cross with first serve set for 10 a.m. The tournament also features Sacred Heart and Northeastern.
UA fans will have the opportunity to enjoy 22 women's volleyball matches in Foster Auditorium this season, including the 10 games of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash which features the teams from Alabama State, Lamar, East Tennessee State University and Austin Peay.
The Crimson Tide will play 15 home matches this season and open Southeastern Conference play against LSU on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. The final home weekend of the season has the Tide hosting South Carolina on Nov. 16 and Auburn on Nov. 18.
