OXFORD, Miss. – In the final match of the 2011 season, the Alabama Crimson Tide volleyball team fell to the Mississippi Rebels, 3-1 (23-25, 26-24, 20-25, 18-25), in a Southeastern Conference match on Friday night from the Gillom Sports Center. Kayla Fitterer paced the Tide with a match-high 19 kills and Stephanie Riley posted her 11th double-double of the season with 34 assists and 19 digs.
With the loss the Tide concludes the season with an 11-20 overall record and a 4-16 mark against SEC opponents. The Rebels wrap up the season with an 11-17 record and a 7-13 ledger against conference foes.
For Fitterer, the 19 kills marked the 23rd time this season the junior outside hitter reached double-digits in kills. She took a match-high 65 attempts in the season finale to post a .185 hitting percentage. Riley finishes her career at the Capstone with her 13th career double-double, as the lone senior on the roster led the team with 34 assists, her 30th match this season with at least 10 assists. Riley also added two kills, one ace and one assisted block.
Andrea McQuaid finished the night with 13 kills, nine digs, five assists and three assisted blocks. Katherine White tallied a career-high seven kills while posting a .385 hitting percentage with two errors on 13 swings. White also had a career-high tying six total blocks (1 solo, 5 assists) against the Rebels.
The Rebels has three players reach double-figures in kills, as Amanda Philpot paced the team with 14. Allegra Wells added 13 kills and Kara Morgan had a dozen. Philpot finished the night with a triple-double as she added a match-high 44 assists to go along with 13 digs. Morgan Springer led all players with 25 digs for Mississippi.
Alabama dropped the opening set 23-25, as the frame ended with Kellie Goss posting a kill. The Tide led 1-0 to open the set but never led again in the opening frame. UA got within one point four times, but could never get enough to overtake the Rebels.
It took extra serves for the Tide to win the second set, 26-24, as White and McQuaid blocked a Whitney Craven attack to end the set, and even the match at 1-1. The Tide led by five (9-4) early, before the Rebels went on a 10-4 run to take a 14-13 lead. After the Rebels opened a 20-16 lead in the set, UA rallied to even the set at 22-22, before taking a 24-23 lead following a White kill.
The third set saw the Tide lead 13-10 midway through the frame, but a 6-1 Mississippi rally gave the Rebels a 16-14 lead. UA evened the set at 16-16, but the Rebels put the foot on the gas and ran away with a 25-20 win. The fourth set ended with a 25-18 victory for the home team. With the score tied at 10-10, Mississippi ran off eight of the next nine points to take a commanding 18-11 advantage, one the Tide could not overcome.
The field of 64 for the 2011 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 27, live on ESPNU beginning at 6 p.m., Eastern. First round matches for the tournament are slated to begin on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 1-2, at campus locations.
