OXFORD, Miss. – The Alabama Crimson Tide went on the road and suffered a 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 14-25) Southeastern Conference loss to the Mississippi Rebels from the Gillom Sports Center on Friday night. With the loss, the Tide falls to 17-14 overall and 6-13 in SEC play, while the Rebels improve to 12-16 overall and 6-13 in conference play.
Alabama finished the match with a .214 hitting percentage while the Rebels hit .240 overall. The Rebels had nine aces, compared to two by the Tide and Mississippi posted eight blocks, while the Tide had seven. UA finished the night with 62 digs and Mississippi had 57.
Kayla Fitterer and Laura Steiner led the Tide with 14 kills each, as Steiner posted a .458 hitting percentage, committing just three errors on 24 swings. Fitterer added 12 digs to notch her eighth double-double of the season and 33rd of her career. Kryssi Daniels led the Tide as she tied her career-high with 19 digs and Cristina Arenas chipped in with 16.
Allegra Wells paced the Rebels with 14 kills and Ty Laporte and Kara Morgan had 10 kills each. Setter Amanda Philpot had a double-double with 41 assists and 12 digs, and Ashley Veach had a double-double as well with 11 assists and a match-high 23 digs. Morgan had four aces as well, while Philpot and Evan St. Laurent had two aces each.
Tide dropped the first set at Mississippi tonight, 21-25. Fitterer led Bama with four kills in the first set, as UA hit .188, compared to a .220 hitting mark by the Rebels. Alabama got as close at 17-16 in the set, but the Rebels went on a 5-0 run to help secure the 25-21 victory to open the night.
Fitterer added seven more kills in the second set to lead the Tide to a 25-16 win in the second set to even the match at 1-1 at the break. Bama posted a .350 hitting percentage in the set, collecting 18 kills, with four errors on 40 attempts. With the score tied 6-6, Bama went on a 10-3 run to take a 16-9 lead, before closing out the set with a nine-point margin.
After the intermission, the Rebels came out and won the next two sets to close out the match in four set. Although the Tide hit .308 in the third set, the Rebels hit .353 in the frame and posted a 25-20 victory in the set to take a 2-1 lead. The Rebels controlled the fourth set from start to finish, as they held the Tide to a .000 hitting mark.
Alabama continues Southeastern Conference action and wraps up its 2012 campaign on Friday night, with a 6:30 p.m. CT, match at Missouri.
