AUBURN, Ala. – The Alabama volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 21-25, 18-25) Southeastern Conference loss to the Auburn Tigers on Sunday afternoon from the Student Activities Center. Laura Steiner led the Crimson Tide (12-4, 1-3 SEC) with 12 kills and a .310 hitting percentage.
After the 12 kills by Steiner, Kayla Fitterer and Andrea McQuaid added nine kills each as they had .136 and .088 hitting percentages respectively. Katherine White added eight kills and Kanesha Burch tied her season-high with six kills. McQuaid led the Tide with 15 digs and Cristina Arenas added 12. Sierra Wilson had 39 assists to go along with nine digs.
Four players had double figures in kills for Auburn (12-2, 3-1 SEC) as Sarah Bullock led all players with 16 kills. Katherine Culwell had 14 kills, Camila Jersonsky had 12 kills and Courtney McDonald added 10. McDonald had nine assisted blocks and Chloe Rowand added had seven.
As a team, Alabama had a difficult hitting day as they posted a .171 hitting mark. The Auburn defense was strong at the net against the UA attack, as the Tigers posted 15 blocks in the match, with eight coming in the fourth set.
Alabama dropped the opening set 25-19, as the Tigers posted a .375 hitting percentage while limiting the Tide to a .229 mark. With the score tied at 9-9, Auburn went on a 5-1 run that the Tide could not come back from. The lead reached as many as eight points (20-12), before UA cut the deficit to four at 23-19, but Auburn got the scored the final to points for a 6-point first set victory.
The Tide evened the match at one set each with a 25-23 second set victory. After Alabama led 23-18, the Tigers scored five of the next six points to get within one (24-23), before a kills by White put the set away.
In the third set, UA hit .231 while allowing the Tigers to hit .423. Alabama held an 11-10 lead before the Tigers went on a 7-3 run to take an 18-14 advantage. The Tide was helped out in the set three service errors, three handling errors and four attacking errors by Auburn. UA trailed 7-6 in the fourth before the Tigers went on a 6-0 run to open a 13-7 advantage. The deficit reached as much as 19-11 before the Tigers put the match away with a 25-18 fourth set win.
The Tide returns to Southeastern Conference action on Friday, Sept. 28, with a home match against the Mississippi Rebels. The match between Alabama and Mississippi is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT from Foster Auditorium.
