BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
A combined 74 student-athletes representing 16 teams were named to the 2011 Southeastern Conference First-Year Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced Thursday.
Football and men’s swimming led the Crimson Tide, as well as all SEC men’s teams, with 11 student-athletes each. Women’s track was next with eight recognized followed by gymnastics, rowing and women’s swimming that had seven, six and five student-athletes represented, respectively. All four of softball’s freshmen made the list, while men’s track also had four honorees. Men’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf, soccer and volleyball each had three honorees. Baseball, women’s basketball and women’s tennis wrapped up Alabama’s list with one student-athlete apiece.
To earn a spot on the honor roll a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution, be on scholarship or a letter winner, have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution and have been a member of the varsity team for the sports entire NCAA championship segment.
The 2011 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2010-11 academic calendar.
