Women's Track & Field Wraps Up Alabama Relays
March 27, 2011 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University Alabama women’s track and field team concluded competition at the Alabama Relays at the Sam Bailey Track Complex Sunday with nine top-10 finishes. The Tide got off to a strong start with a victory in the 4x100 meter shuttle hurdle relay. The team of Kim Laing, Audra Frimpong, Talaya Owens and Kaylon Eppinger recorded a time of 56.60. In the 4x100 meter relay, junior Toni Graham teamed up with Frimpong, Laing and Eppinger for third place, finishing with a time of 47.33. “Overall I think we had a great meet,” head coach Sandy Fowler said. “When I talked to the team I told them this is a home meet and you do what you have to do at a home meet, which is get out there and compete hard. With that comes respect for your team, yourself, the facility and the University. I think they showed that big time out here.” Freshmen Palee Myrex and Aubrielle Wright teamed up with junior Meghan Hawkins and senior Sara Vaughn for the distance medley relay, finishing in fourth place with a time of 12:36.84. Alabama closed the day out with a second-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Devon Romero, Talaya Owens, Camilla Armstead and Dacia Mays posted a time of 3:44.61. “I’m excited because this is probably one of our best opening meets ever in regards to the relays, leading us into the rest of the season,” Fowler said. “Those who have been here for a little know where they end their season, especially at SECs, regionals and nationals. Far and beyond, we had many girls perform close to or better than where they left off last season, and that’s what I look at. From this point forward we have to step it up, keep going and move forward.” The women’s team will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Auburn, Ala., to compete in the Tiger Track Classic.
