TUSCALOOSA Alabama completed the second and final day of competition Saturday at the 21st Annual Roberta Fall Classic by winning eight of 11 matches played.
Freshmen Paulina Bigos and Nicole Briceno led the Crimson Tide Saturday by combining for four victories. Bigos and Briceno each earned one singles victory and paired up in doubles for two more wins. For Bigos, it was her first collegiate wins in both singles and doubles. Briceno finished the weekend 4-2 overall.
“I saw a lot of good things from match to match,” Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said. “Friday I saw a lot of jitters but we settled into our game a little more today and were more patient.”
Fellow freshmen Alice Tunaru and Bianca Svensson also won singles matches Saturday and each finished the weekend 2-1 in singles play. In all, Alabama freshmen won nine times at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
“We achieved our objectives this weekend,” Mainz said. “We’re young and we need a lot of match play. We saw a lot of good things and it was a good weekend for us to evaluate where we are.”
Senior Mari Muller, who won 21 matches last season, picked up her first victory of the season. Muller downed Emily Wade of UNC Greensboro in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Muller and doubles partner Andrea Brenes posted a 1-1 record on the day.
“I like some of our doubles combinations. Mari (Muller) and (Andrea) Brenes could be a very good team. Paulina (Bigos) and Nicole (Tunaru) showed good chemistry,” Mainz said.
