TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama women’s tennis team begins fall practice in Tuscaloosa this week with some new faces for the 2003-2004 squad.

“It’s great to finally get to practice together as a unified team,” head coach Jenny Mainz said.  “I’m excited about the season ahead.  The fall is a time to come together as a team and a good chance to work with our new players and assess talent.”

The Tide added two talented newcomers to the roster for the fall, Mari Muller (Fr., Rio Negro, Argentina) and Sonja Nikolic (Fr., Garmisch, Germany).  Muller won two singles titles and one doubles championship playing at the second-highest level of Argentina’s Cordoba Premiere league in 2002.  Nikolic competed in the Orange Bowl Classic, Eddie Herr and Prince Cup international tournaments in 1999, but her play was limited in 2001 and 2002 due to a stress fracture in her leg.

The University of Alabama will play host to one fall tournament, the Roberta Alison Fall Classic, on Oct. 3-5.  Participating in the event will be individuals for Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Louisiana-Monroe, UAB, Birmingham Southern, Samford, South Alabama, Florida State and Tennessee-Chattanooga.

In addition, the Crimson Tide’s fall schedule includes the UNLV Fall Invitational in Las Vegas (Sept. 26-28), the Riveira All-American in Los Angeles, Calif (Oct. 4-12), the ITA South Regionals in Athens, Ga. (Oct. 17-20), the ITA National Indoors in Dallas, Texas (Nov. 6-8) and the SEC Fall Coaches Classic in Peach Tree City, Ga. (Nov. 7-9).

The University of Alabama tennis teams will host its semiannual tennis play day this Sunday at the brand new Hillcrest High School tennis courts from 2-4 p.m.
