BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Rising junior Natalia Maynetto battled for nearly three hours to claim the ITA/USTA National Summer Singles title, beating Vanderbilt's Frances Altick, 7-5, 0-6, 10-8. With the win, Maynetto receives a wildcard into the main draw of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.
"Natalia has done an exemplary job this summer of grinding it out on the tournament path," said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. "She made the commitment to really lock in and improve this summer, getting as many matches under her belt as possible. She positioned herself well by going into the national summer championship as the south region leader. I'm very pleased with the way Natalia buckled down and got the work done this summer. She definitely improved but she also made Alabama better."
Maynetto, a 5-8 seed, had a bye in the first round before shutting out Princeton's Sara Goodwin, 6-0, 6-0 in the round of 64. She then beat Ryann Foster of Texas, 6-2, 6-1, before outlasting 9-16 seed Daniela Vidal of Purdue in three sets, 6-0, 5-7, 10-6. In the quarterfinals, Maynetto topped Indiana's Stephanie Smith, 6-1, 6-2, and received a walkover in the semifinals.
The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships will be played at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Sept. 27-Oct. 5. Specific dates for the main draw have not yet been set.
