Alabama Women's Tennis Falls to 15th-Ranked Kentucky

The University of Alabama women’s tennis team lost 7-0 to the 15th ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Friday in Lexington, Kentucky. The loss drops No. 41 Alabama to 12-7 on the season and 3-6 in the SEC.

The Wildcats claimed a 1-0 early lead as they took the doubles point by winning at number one and three doubles. At number one doubles, Kentucky’s 8th ranked doubles team of Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten defeated Alabama’s Millie Begovic and Weyli Chang 8-2. The Wildcats also won at number three doubles as Jill Buckley and Shannon Stafford won 8-5 over Bama’s Selia Mathew and Becca Baum. Alabama’s Sophie Cremers and Jenny Ketchum versus Kentucky’s Lauren Rookledge and Leigh Bradwell at number two doubles did not finish.

Kentucky went on to win all six of the singles matches for the 7-0 victory. At number one singles, Kentucky’s 56th ranked Witten won 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 over Alabama’s   Mathew. Bama’s Ketchum lost 7-6, 6-1 to the Wildcats’ 32nd ranked Mayorga at number two singles. UA’s Begovic was defeated by UK’s 96th ranked Rookledge 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 at number three singles. Kentucky’s Buckley won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 over Alabama’s Cremers at the number four singles position. At number five singles, the Wildcats’ Bradwell defeated the Crimson Tide’s Chang 6-4, 6-2. UK’s Stafford won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at number six singles over UA’s Baum.

“We were not ready to play today,” UA head coach Jenny Mainz said. “We are not playing the way we need to play in order to be successful.”

Alabama will next take on the 6th ranked Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. The Crimson Tide will then wrap up their regular season schedule at UAB on Friday and at Auburn next Sunday.
