SKILLMAN, N.J. - Freshman Alexa Guarachi continues to collect accolades during her rookie campaign, as she was named the 2010 Southern Region Freshman of the Year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Friday.
"Alexa has taken care of business at the top of the lineup and is truly deserving of her accolades," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "She has embraced the challenges of facing the best players in the Southeastern Conference and the Southern Region."
A native of Destin, Fla., Guarachi earned a spot on the 2010 All-SEC Second Team, as well as being named to the All-SEC Freshman Team. She currently sits at No. 58 in the nation in singles, while teaming up with sophomore Courtney McLane to rank No. 17 in the nation in doubles. Guarachi qualified for both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships later this month, making her just the third player in school history to qualify for both.
Guarachi played at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions for Alabama this season, compiling a 16-6 record in dual contests. She was stellar at the No. 2 spot, winning 14 of her 15 matches. Overall, she finished the season with a 27-9 singles record. Guarachi was just as successful in doubles, compiling a 28-9 record on the season. She was 13-4 at the No. 1 position, while also going a perfect 4-0 at the No. 2 spot. She and McLane took down five nationally-ranked duos and closed the season with a seven-match winning streak.
"Alexa continues to raise her level and is excited about representing the Crimson Tide in the NCAA Championships in late May," Mainz added. "I'm proud of Alexa for her Freshman of the Year award and feel confident that she will finish this season strong."
