May 13, 2014

SKILLMAN, N.J. - Mary Anne Daines and Emily Zabor were both recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as the organization released its regional award winners on Tuesday. Daines was named the Southern Region Senior Player of the Year, while Zabor took home ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award honors.

Daines, the 2014 Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is a two-time ITA All-American earning singles honors in 2012 and doubles honors in 2013. She was a member of the 2013 ITA All-Star Team member, the first in program history, after advancing to the semifinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. Daines is a three-time First Team All-SEC selection and garnered SEC Freshman of the Year and ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. She has played at the No. 1 singles position throughout her entire career at Alabama and has been ranked nationally in singles and doubles all four seasons.

Daines graduated Summa Cum Laude in 3.5 years with a bachelor of science in education, majoring in human performance exercise science, all while holding a 4.000 cumulative undergraduate GPA. She is currently enrolled in a Master's program in human environmental sciences majoring in sport management. Daines, the 2012 NCAA Elite 89 Award winner, is a three-time ITA Scholar-Athlete and three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.

Zabor, a 2014 SEC All-Tournament Team selection, is second on the team with 23 singles victories throughout the season, including 15 in dual-match play. She has been nationally ranked in both singles and doubles this season and had, perhaps, the biggest win of her career, clinching the Tide's 4-3 victory against then-No. 10 Virginia with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(2) win. Zabor also posted a come-from-behind win at Georgia in three sets to help the Tide win the SEC Championship and was voted Team MVP by her teammates for the 2013-14 season. Head coach Jenny Mainz calls Zabor the most unselfish student-athlete she's coached in her career and believes Zabor's leadership is a key reason why the team has reached new heights this season including a No. 2 ranking and an SEC Championship.

Zabor graduated in three years with a degree in commerce & business administration, majoring in marketing. She currently has a 4.000 cumulative GPA and has been a member of the President's List and Dean's List throughout her academic career. The 2013 NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for women's tennis, Zabor is also a two-time National ITA Scholar-Athlete Award and member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
