In addition to competing as a team in the 2012 NCAA Championships, women's tennis will also be represented in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships that will take place May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Junior Alexa Guarachi and sophomore Mary Anne Macfarlane were two of 64 selected into the singles field, while Guarachi and senior Courtney McLane made up one of 32 duos chosen for the doubles draw.
Guarachi, a two-time All-SEC First Team selection, is making her third appearance in doubles and second in singles. She has been a steady fixture in the national rankings in both all season. Guarachi was named SEC Player of the Week twice this season and only lost one singles match in SEC play, which came against a higher-ranked opponent. She has earned 30 victories in singles, taking down nine nationally-ranked foes along the way.
Macfarlane, also a two-time All-SEC First Team selection, has enjoyed a successful sophomore season with the Tide, as she leads the team in singles and doubles victories with 32 and 30, respectively. She holds a national singles and doubles ranking and has earned 14 wins over ranked opponents in singles this season. Macfarlane broke the single season win record by a No. 1 player this season and is tied for the second most wins in a season overall.
As a team, Guarachi and McLane are currently one win away from becoming the winningest doubles teams in Alabama history. Together, they broke the single-season record for a doubles team in 2011, collecting 29 victories and also attained a program-best national ranking of No. 2. This season, the duo has amassed 15 wins together, all of which were won during the spring season. Throughout the course of the year, Guarachi and McLane have beaten four nationally-ranked opponents.
